On April 19, 2014, according to an article by U.S. News and World Report, “A total of 23,000 acre-feet of water spilled in the Gulf of Mexico and South Florida on September 20, 2010, the equivalent of about 1.5 miles [2 kilometers] of water. By that evening, the level had dropped to about 1.1 feet above the surface, and water levels remained fairly steady throughout the day.” A report, “Deepwater Horizon: A New Look at Texas Gas Spill,” conducted a four-day investigation and concluded that the incident was the worst spill in U.S. history, with the “largest cumulative impact to human health.”
At the time, the EPA and Department of Transportation estimated the average loss across the Gulf region at $35.5 billion, or the equivalent of 1.1 percent of the U.S. energy production.

The latest study on Gulf oil spills by the National Research Council, also published in 2013, projected a total cost of up to $10 billion for clean-up at the region’s worst-hit oil field, the Deepwater Horizon. However, the cost was only roughly half as high as it was a few years prior, when the Deepwater Horizon was still operating. “That cost is now a third of what it was in 2012,” the authors wrote.
