Testosterone spray trialed in dementia study
After a trial involving rats, a hormone spray appeared to help alleviate symptoms in older adults with memory loss.
“Dementia is becoming a much more visible part of aging, and perhaps one that people like me could do a lot to help prevent,” study senior author Jaimie B. Vlach told the Associated Press.
Researchers at New York University School of Medicine in the United States compared the use of steroids to the effectiveness of a medication used to treat Alzheimer’s.
In the three studies that included older people in both groups, participants got injections of testosterone in either doses, 10 to 20 milligrams in one month or 5 milligrams in three months, and then followed a regimen of daily testosterone injections until they reached about age 70.
After a year and a half, those receiving the injections had about 60 percent fewer memory-related problems than those receiving either the placebo or injections of either sex, the researchers found.
“There were significant improvements in cognitive performance and functional outcomes in both groups of elderly subjects, suggesting they could help protect individuals from this kind of chronic mental deterioration,” study co-author Dr. Alan C. Vlach, a professor at NYU and a neuropathologist, said in a news release.
The trial is ongoing, with more information expected to be available in the near future,전주출장안마 Dr. Vlach said.
Dr. John V. Foa, director of the National Institute on Aging in the United States, said the findings in the study support the idea of hormone therapy for mild to moderate cognitive impairment.
In elderly patients, testosterone might help reduce the severity of Alzheimer’s or stroke, according to the National Institute on Aging.
The drugs currently used by U.S. clinicians also can help reduce memory loss, but a major factor in keeping seniors out of harm’s way is to minimize physical impairment, Dr. Foa said. In older people, the lack of strength may help diminish their ability to walk, he a세종출장샵dded.
With that in mind, many senior-care providers have started using testosterone-enhancing drugs such as Propecia to ease pain in patients with older, memory-related probl안산출장마사지 안산출장안마ems, even when those patients aren’t showing signs of memory loss, Vlach said.
