Thakuranathan, the government official in charge of the state, said, “The number of people caught with drinks between 2 p.m. and midnight has reached 100. We are trying to keep track of them.”
The government and police have begun cracking down on repeat drinkers as they arrive in the capital from Kollam district.
In Kerala, alcohol is considered illegal in the state for sale from within 10km of its commercial district. “At the moment, we are not letting people pass by outside these towns, especially since there are no security checks or a central presence in these towns, so that if a person comes to us, we can help him,” the senior official said.

The Hindu Samaj Party (HSP), which has links with both the State and the Centre, believes that the number of deaths of Dalit women is only a fraction of the total number of murders of them.
